"AMGtech - now with more recalls!" (amgtech)

By taking it snowboarding, mountain biking, camping, etc etc etc. Put simply, the opening of this song nails it:
I don’t care what it looks like. I don’t care how perfect it’s condition is. I don’t care if it’s automotive sacrilege because it’s rare or some such bullshit. I love it because of how fun it is, how comfortable it is, how well it handles things it was never meant to handle. And maybe, just a little, because of the comments I get when I do these things.
I’m sure aestheticsinmotion, and many other oppos, understand.

No, you’re using it. As much as I love cars (and I do love them), they’re expendable goods. In that, if you use them, they will wear out. That’s ok, because if you DON’T use it YOU MIGHT AS WELL NOT HAVE IT.

Is an E55 considered rare? Anyway, agreed. It’s a car, not a glass vase.

Well they only imported like 1200 or so. Definitely debatable.

I say use it. If you’re a short-termer (like every 3 years) then keeping it in great shape can make a big difference in marketability. But I’m more a fan of buying for the long term, keeping it in good mechanical shape, and using it for everything under the sun. After a decade, the values between “fair” and “excellent” are immaterial.
In other words, the bad financial decision isn’t keeping your car perfect...it’s failing to use it for everything it can do.

Exactly. And sometimes, when I’m planning on driving with friends, they want to bring their dogs but are afraid to damage my nice car. I’m like “screw that! I can fix it or replace it! Bring ‘em!”

No idea how long I’m going to keep it. But I’m going to love every minute of it. And besides, it’s already at the bottom of its depreciation curve.

Both. Lots of coworkers and clients. 210 E55 has an almost mythical status among Mercedes techs because it’s rare, reliable, simple to work on, and totally budget friendly while still being badass(ish).

Drive it! I take objection to classics in salt (nothing rots faster; if it’s made it 30 years in once piece it’s just rude to ruin it now) but otherwise go for it, rain or shine.

I don’t think there are many other things that piss me off as much as people telling me what to do with my property.

Sure. Salt here is rare. Mostly just gravel on snowy and icy roads. Even still, there’s a car wash at work that I can use for free.

Go for it, man. It’s basically a brine fog outside from December to April around here.

I’d still do it maybe not with super rare and collectible cars, but this one is not, maybe someday, but not now.

Heck, I have to put a wheelchair in and out of my car in all types of weather several times a day. If I worried about messing it up, I’d never go anywhere. Cars are to be used.

I’ve been maintaining my new car to destruction for the last 15 years whilst all the while driving it all over much of Australia over all sorts of roads and tracks. Whilst by no means a desirable vehicle in the minds of automotive enthusiasts...if I didn’t use it this way...it would die. As would yours and many others like it.
If it’s in a museum or a collection then it’s probably dead, stuffed and mounted. Same goes with cars.

My car looks even worse than this at the moment because temps have consistently been topping out at maybe 5 degrees, there’s a shitload of salt on the roads, and I haven’t had a chance to wash it.

100% Agree. That’s how I treat my current car (not really sports car), and that’s how I plan to treat my next car (will be sports car). Screw the naysayers.

More power to you - I’ve fought with and repaired (and given up on) enough rust that I try to keep the salt away. When the Chevelle was my only car way back when, it was driver year-round and I’m paying for it now with all the bodywork it needs. The RX7 came from Georgia and is pristine, I intend to keep it that way.

Totally get that. I’m originally from Minnesota, so no stranger to rust. I’d keep driving, just take more precautions and have more washes.
